Longtime Headmistress of Sacred Heart to Retire
Greenwich's Convent of the Sacred Heart is about to lose their longtime leader. Sister Joan Magnetti, Headmistress of the all girls private school on King Street retires on June 30th after 19 years. She has a long history with the institution. The Advocate reports she first taught there in the 1960's before taking other positions ending up as headmistress when school officials invited her back.
Since 1990 Sister Magnetti has watched enrollment go from 295 to 775 students from preschool through 12th grade, adding more racial and economic diversity along the way. She also oversaw a $25 million dollar expansion which included a new library. Sister Magnetti says she is proudest of focusing much of the school's efforts towards educating students about global poverty and inequality. She feels that's important for a school located in the affluent Greenwich area.
