Chimpanzee Attack sends 2 Women to Hospital in Stamford
Two women are hospitalized after a pet chimpanzee goes on a rampage in Stamford Monday afternoon.
Police shot and killed the large chimpanzee, named Travis, after it attacked a visitor at 241 Rockrimmon Road. Police Captain Richard Conklin says the homeowner Sandra Harold attempted to stop the animal from attacking her friend -- even stabbing him several times with a butcher knife. But Conklin says the chimp was still on the move when officers arrived to protect the scene so the victim could be evacuated.
Conklin says officers were forced to take refuge inside squad cars. "The chimpanzee knocked off one of the mirrors on one of the patrol cars and tried to open one door in an effort to get at one of the officers," Conklin said. "At that point, the officers shot the chimpanzee several times."
Conklin says the visitor sustained serious facial injuries while Harold suffered a heart attack. The chimp had a previous escape back in 2003.

What others are saying
- chimpno matter what people may think no matter how much this lady loved her monkey. This is still a wild animal that should not have been treated like a human. Hell you can not trust humans how are you going to trust a 200lb beast.
- chimpanzeeNo one shuld own a ape of any kind .They are wild no matter how you trained them.
I think the police should hsve used a stun gun to put him to the ground, rather then killing him. There is a reason why he did this.,it could be medicine he was on or he did not get his own way.
Its an terrible thing to happen. - ChimpWhy did the chimp do that? On the news it said he was loving, and then just ripping here face off. I was just shocked when I saw it just now.
- Chimp AttackThank god the women will live, albeit scarred and damaged. But the lesson is wild animals will always revert to wild behaviors. Same story over and over. Someone out there will still be in denial and will defend this "pet" being kept in a household. Drinking wine from a stemmed glass does not make them safe any more than an unknown person drinking wine from a stemmed glass does.
Man is literally not so different is he? - chimp gone madThis was an accident that could have been avoided. Full grown chimps, no matter how well raised, or how well trained, are just too strong and too dangerous to be kept as pets. Although I feel for the owner, she is fully responsible for the fate of her chimp and her friend.
