The city of Norwalk's proposal to lease the City Carting owned Meadow Street garbage collection facility for private commercial dumping has been resoundly defeated by Norwalk's common council at a public vote last night.

Mayor Richard Moccia said at the meeting that this decision to nix the plan put forward in at least four public hearings, is because the will of the people was too strongly against it.

The proposal caused numerous protests among residents who live by the Sono facility; claiming that the plan would have caused large increases in traffic, noise and pollution.

The plan would have created a greater seperation between Meadow Street for commecial hauling and the city owned Cresent Street facility for residential garbage and recycling. That facility's use still stands despite the plan's defeat.

The vote was 13 - 0 with one absetention and one absent member.
