As record high fuel prices continue to stress budgets, many motorists are looking to improve their car mileage with a method called hypermiling.  One way of hypermiling is to roll through stop signs, another is by tailgating trucks to cut down on wind resistance. Those methods show that hypermiling can be dangerous.

Triple A spokeperson Fran Mayko says, "The extreme hypermiler substantially increases his mileage by adopting certain driving techniques, but unfortuately certain techiques can be down right dangerous.

On the other hand, hypermilers that use correct methods can help increase their mileage thus reducing costs. "Other safe ways to increase mileage include driving slower, having plenty of air in your tires and using smooth easy acceleration," says Mayko.
