Cap and Trade Postgame

There was a lot of celebration and outrage expressed over the weekend by politicians and voters alike after the House on Friday approved a global warming bill from Democrats.

The "cap and trade" bill won by a vote of 219-212. Eight Republicans voted for the bill, so if you look at just that, switching those votes to 'no' would have killed the bill.

Various groups quickly picked up on the internet like, "Removal of Turn Coat Republicans Who Voted for the Global Warming Bill," on Facebook, as Republicans vowed revenge against the Cap and Trade Eight.

The GOP eight were Bono Mack (CA), Castle (DE), Kirk (IL), Lance (NJ), LoBiondo (NJ), McHugh (NY), Reichert (WA) and Smith (NJ.)

For Democrats obviously, it was a major victory, as President Obama tried to capitalize on the momentum by scrapping a health care radio address set for Saturday and replacing it with one that urged the Senate to act on climate change.

"I'm confident that in the coming weeks and months the Senate will demonstrate the same commitment to addressing what is a tremendous challenge and an extraordinary opportunity," the President said after the vote.

The Senate will obviously be a much tougher nut to crack for the Democrats, since a filibuster seems almost assured.

But what if - what if - Democrats decide to try to jam this into the "budget reconciliation" process that they've talked about using for health care?

You know, the one where filibusters aren't allowed?

There had been talk about that a few months ago, so I wouldn't count it out.

We'll see what surfaces in the weeks ahead.
