The Rush For Memorial Day
It's a familiar week in the Congress, as lawmakers try to cram a lot of work into their schedules before rushing out on a 10 day Memorial Day break.
Getting most of the play will be the Senate's work on extra money for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, especially after last week's parliamentary wrangle in the House, which resulted in a defeat for $163 billion in war funding.
President Bush had demanded repeatedly that Congress approve that money before Memorial Day, but that looks highly doubtful at this point.
That will guarantee a lot of GOP campaign events on Memorial Day weekend in which they will dutifully abuse the Democrats, centering their caustic jabs on the lack of final action on war money.
Look for Mr. Bush to chime in as well on that point this week. He is back from the Mideast after a trip there that started a huge dustup involving Barack Obama.
I won't be surprised if the White House decides to hold a news conference this week, allowing the President to jab back at Obama as well.
One thing to watch in the Senate is whether the Presidential candidates make a trek back to Washington, D.C. for any votes on Iraq and Afghan war money.
Obviously, foreign policy disputes between Obama and McCain erupted last week and the two could have themselves a mini-debate (with Hillary stammering in the wings) later this week.
Then again, they could all stay on the Trail and take shots at each long distance, and even let their backers in the Senatw do their verbal dirty work for them.
Usually, you wouldn't expect the nominees to spend too much time in the Senate once the Fall Campaign kicks off. But it will be interesting to see if Obama and/or McCain try to one up each other with surprise visits to the Senate floor to address certain issues.
Stay tuned.
