A Good Superdelegate Day for Obama

While it's been a fairly crummy last five days or so for the Barack Obama campaign, if they can just blot out the memory of Rev. Jeremiah Wright doing impressions of JFK and LBJ for a minute, Obama staffers will be able to realize that they keep moving closer and closer to the Democratic nomination every day.

On Wednesday, three more superdelegates went over to Obama, all three members of Congress, from Iowa, California and Indiana.

Hillary Clinton meanwhile picked up two more superdelegates, one from Pennsylvania and Puerto Rico.

On Tuesday, it was a 2-2 split, while Obama added one on Monday.

So in the last three days, even as he was being buffeted by Rev. Wright, Obama has the superdelegate edge, 7-4.

That again shows how difficult it is for Hillary Clinton to catch up in this race.  We now have fewer than 300 undecided superdelegates, and Clinton needs about 75% of those.

She can reduce that percentage by winning a larger share of delegates in the remaining primary and caucus states, like Indiana and North Carolina, which vote next Tuesday.

When it comes to the undecided Democratic members of Congress in this race, I figure most of them know deep in their heart who they are voting for.  The only issue is when they are going to reveal that.

Yes, a few of them probably hope they can ride the fence for another month and then come out for Obama when he clinches the nomination, or come out for Clinton if she makes a giant comeback.

Of course, you risk being the LAST superdelegate who is undecided - and then you will have camera crews chasing you around the city and watching you put out the trash and cut the grass while waiting for a puff of white smoke from your Congressional Chimney.

Obama can pretty much end all this suspense by winning more delegates next Tuesday and then grinding Clinton down the rest of the way.

But a double loss...well, then things would get very interesting.

And if you are old enough to remember Arte Johnson on Laugh-In saying that, then more power to you.
