(Undated) -- Here are the latest sports stories making headlines: The Yankees edged the A's. The Braves dumped the Mets again. And, Andy Roddick was sent packing at the U.S. Open.

Yankees Edge A's

(Bronx, NY) -- Mark Teixeira [[ tuh-SHARE-uh ]] doubled home two runs during a three-run second inning as the Yankees edged the Athletics 4-3 at Yankee Stadium. Teixeira also had an RBI double in the first inning for the Yankees, who will go for a four-game sweep on Thursday. A.J. Burnett struck out eight over six innings of three-run ball to improve to 10-and-12. Mariano Rivera closed things out to earn his 28th save. Kevin Kouzmanoff clubbed a solo homer for Oakland. Brett Anderson permitted four runs, only one of which was earned, over six innings to fall to 3-and-6. CC Sabathia will be on the mound when the series wraps up this afternoon. The A's will counter with Dallas Braden. First-pitch is at 1:05.

Hanson, Heyward Lead Braves Past Mets

(Atlanta, GA) -- Tommy Hanson allowed only one hit over seven shutout innings as the Braves beat the Mets 4-1 at Turner Field. Hanson struck out three and walked one en route to improving to 9-and-10 on the season. Billy Wagner tossed a perfect ninth to earn his 31st save. Jason Heyward went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Braves, who will go for a four-game sweep on Thursday. Martin Prado [[ mar-TEEN PRAH-doh ]] doubled home a pair of runs in the victory. Luis Hernandez had a pinch-hit, RBI single in the eighth for the Mets. Mike Pelfrey permitted all four runs over five frames to fall to 13-and-8. Johan Santana will be on the mound in the series finale tonight. The Braves will counter with Tim Hudson. First-pitch is at 7:10 p.m.

Roddick Upset, Harrison Stuns Ljubicic, Venus Advances At U.S. Open

(Flushing Meadows, NY) -- Ninth-seeded American Andy Roddick was sent packing with a second-round upset loss at the hands of Janko Tipsarevic [[ YANK-oh tip-SAR-oh-vitch ]] Wednesday at the U.S. Open. Tipsarevic dropped the first set before taking the next three for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory. Roddick, who celebrated his 28th birthday with a first-round win on Monday, is the last American male to win a Grand Slam, having won the 2003 U.S. Open. Eighteenth-seeded American John Isner [[ IZZ-ner ]] won his first-round match, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 over Frederico Gil, while 20th-seeded Sam Querrey got by Bradley Klahn in four sets, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Teenage qualifier Ryan Harrison upset 15th-seeded Ivan Ljubicic [[ LOO-bih-chitch ]] 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-4.

On the women's side, third-seeded Venus Williams won her second-round match 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 over Rebecca Marino. Second-seeded Kim Clijsters [[ CLY-sters ]] also advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sally Peers in her second-round matchup. Tenth-seeded Victoria Azarenka retired trailing 5-1 in the first set of her second-round tilt when she collapsed on the court in the intense heat.

Liberty Advances To East Finals

(New York, NY) -- Cappie Pondexter hit the game-winning bucket with 27.9 seconds left to lift the Liberty to a 77-74 win over the Indiana Fever in the decisive Game Three of their Eastern Conference semifinal series at The Garden. Pondexter scored five of her 30 points in the final 1:14 of regulation. The Liberty will face the Atlanta Dream in the Eastern Conference finals. Atlanta and New York split the four regular-season meetings with each other. Game One of their best-of-three series will be Sunday night in New York.

Giants, Jets Wrap Up Preseason

(Undated) -- Both the Giants and Jets will wrap up preseason play this evening. The Giants will close out exhibition play by hosting the New England Patriots at New Meadowlands Stadium. The nationally-televised tilt will begin at 7:00 p.m. The Jets will be on the road to face the Eagles in Philadelphia. That game will get underway at 7:30 p.m.
