The Latest
(Undated) -- Here are the latest local sports headlines: It was another busy day for the Jets Tuesday. The Hawks hammered the Nets. The Habs nipped the Rangers. The Islanders clipped the Canucks. And, the Yankees beat the Astros.
Tomlinson Talks To Media
(Florham Park, NY) -- New Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson says he hopes to win a championship in New York. The five-time Pro Bowler said during a media conference call he came to the Jets over the Minnesota Vikings to be reunited with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. The OC was The Chargers' quarterbacks coach from 2002-05 and Tomlinson said it came down to already knowing the offensive scheme. Tomlinson spent his first nine seasons in the NFL with San Diego, and was with the team when it lost to "Gang Green" in the division round of the playoffs earlier this year. Tomlinson has 12,490 career rushing yards and 3,955 receiving yards to go along with 153 touchdowns. He currently ranks eighth on the NFL's all-time rushing list and third all-time in touchdowns.
Jets Bringing Back Richardson
(Florham Park, NJ) -- The Jets have agreed in principle on a contract with fullback Tony Richardson for the 2010 season. Richardson returns for a 16th NFL season and for a third year in New York. Last year he blocked for the NFL's top rushing offense in front of veteran Thomas Jones and rookie Shonn Greene. Used almost exclusively as a blocker, Richardson has just 17 rushing attempts in his two seasons with the Jets.
Jets Ink Rodrique Wright
(Florham Park, NJ) -- The Jets have signed defensive end Rodrique Wright. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Wright was inactive for the entire 2008 season as a member of the Dolphins and was waived by Miami prior to the start of last season. He was a seventh-round pick in the 2006 draft, and spent his rookie season on the reserve/non-football injury list due to a shoulder injury he suffered while playing football at the University of Texas. The only action he has seen was in 2007 when he appeared in 13 games and started nine. He had 37 tackles and one-and-a-half sacks.
Hawks Hammer Nets
(East Rutherford, NJ) -- Jamal Crawford scored a game-high 25 points off the bench as the Hawks hammered the Nets 108-84 at IZOD Center. Brook Lopez scored 21 points, and Josh Boone racked up 13 points and 20 boards for the Nets, who have lost five in-a-row and 12 straight at home to dip to 7-and-60 on the year. Terrence Williams added 15 points, six boards and four helpers in defeat. Devin Harris missed the game with a respiratory infection. The Nets are right back in action tonight against the 76ers in Philadelphia. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.
Knicks Clash With Celtics
(Boston, MA) -- The Knicks battle the Celtics at TD Garden in Boston tonight. The Knicks notched a 94-84 win over the Sixers their last time out on Monday. New York has won two straight to enter tonight's affair 24-and-43 on the season. Tip-off tonight is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Habs Skate Past Rangers
(New York, NY) -- The Canadiens scored twice in the third period to notch a 3-1 win over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Glen Metropolit put Montreal on the board with a power-play goal 3:34 into the first. Sean Avery tied it 2:02 into the second. Sergei Kostitsyn gave the Habs the lead back 5:59 into the third, and Tomas Plekanec sealed the deal with a shorthanded empty-netter. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 32 shots for New York, which is three points behind Boston for the final playoff spot in the East. The Blueshirts will wrap up the three-game homestand tomorrow by hosting the St. Louis Blues.
Tavares' Five Points Lead Isles Past Canucks
(Vancouver, British Columbia) -- John Tavares scored two goals and assisted on three others as the Islanders skated to a 5-2 win over the Canucks at General Motors Place. Dylan Reese and Tavares scored in the first period, and Matt Moulson tallied in the second to give New York a 3-0 lead. Kyle Wellwood and Alex Burrows answered two minutes apart late in the second to get Vancouver within one, but Freddy Meyer lit the lamp with eight seconds left in the second and Tavares scored into an empty net in the third as the Isles won their third straight. Dwayne Roloson made 35 saves in the win. The Isles trip continues Friday in Anaheim against the Ducks.
Devils Can Catch Pens Tonight
(Newark, NJ) -- The Devils can tie the Penguins for second place in the Eastern Conference when the teams meet at the Rock tonight. New Jersey has 85 points, two less than their Atlantic Division rivals. The Devils enter the game having won three of their last four contests, while the Pens have lost two of their last three games. New Jersey beat Pittsburgh 3-1 last Friday. This will be the sixth and final meeting between the teams in the 2009-10 regular season. The Devils have won all five previous games in the season series.

Mariano Rivera made his debut and tossed a scoreless inning. The Yanks will face the Phillies at 1:05 this afternoon.
